Pressure sprayer
Applied directly to the cargo, with KRM's own equipment. We do not depend on the terminal's installation, so the operation is not conditional on the fitting-out of the berth.
02 — Operational services
Visual marking of the cargo, with the dye and dosage required by the buyer. Applied with our own equipment, at the loading berth.
Discuss a coloration operation ↗Purpose of the operation
Coloration marks a parcel of grain so that it can be identified without equipment, throughout its journey. It is applied as an aqueous solution to the surface of the grain and is removed in subsequent processing.
It is used for grain intended for animal feed and for sowing. The requirement comes from the buyer or from the import rules of the country of destination — not from European legislation.
Coloration can be applied selectively, to the holds agreed, rather than to the whole quantity.
How it is applied
Applied directly to the cargo, with KRM's own equipment. We do not depend on the terminal's installation, so the operation is not conditional on the fitting-out of the berth.
Spraying at the point where the grain leaves the spout, where the configuration allows it and the terminal accepts it.
Integrated into the loading flow, through a system adapted to the installation. Agreed after assessment of the operation.
Two things decide whether the operation went well: the uniformity of the coverage and adherence to the agreed dosage. Both are recorded.
KRM's role
KRM carries out the coloration. We do not independently verify our own intervention.
We document the operation — what was applied, at what dosage, to which holds, over what period — and the resulting document is an operational record, not an independent finding.
Coloration is applied as an aqueous solution and affects the moisture of the parcel. The quantity of water added depends on the concentration of the solution and is declared. Where the same cargo is also subject to a KRM verification of quantity or quality, the two mandates are agreed separately and in writing, before the operation.
Before the operation
Requests often arrive with a specification passed on from the buyer or the agent. We confirm it in writing before starting, in the form in which it was issued.
The dosage is not taken from memory, nor from a previous operation. It is confirmed for every shipment.
We issue a certificate recording the operation: the vessel, the port, the cargo, the quantity, the destination, the holds treated, the dye, the dosage applied and the period over which the work was carried out. The Master countersigns for receipt of the document, not in confirmation of the operation.
The certificate does not attest that the cargo complies with the requirements of the country of destination, and contains no findings as to quantity or quality. Those are a separate mandate.
The requirement for coloration comes from the buyer's specification or from the import rules of the destination. The marketing of cereal seed in the EU is governed by Directive 66/402/EEC, which works through certification and labels, not through dyeing of the grain. Conditions of use for additives are checked in the European Commission database. The cargo, the end use and the jurisdiction determine the conditions of each operation.
